Does anyone have any info on polymer clay? March 21, 2010

I have a question about polymer clay. I have stretched ear piercings, and was wanting to try and make earings out of polymer clay. The clay would be in constant contact with my skin. Does anyone know if this would be safe? Is there any thing I could finish it with to make it safer?
Thanks guys, from what I’ve read everyone has a different opinion on the forums. I think I’ll give it a try. Has anyone ever worn polyclay earings themselves?

I’d use a non-toxic light glaze. That would protect the clay as well as your ears.

This has been discussed extensively on one of the Polymer Clay boards at craftster.com… the answer isn’t quite simple, but there’s lots of info there and then you can make up your own mind (be sure to read to the very end because the tape sounds promising):

Use the clay to make beads and then attach the beads
to earring findings. It will be much safer. You can
find all of the accesseries in Michael’s and
Hobby Lobby.

You can finish it with painting a coat of clear nail polish. This way your designs n colours will be seen but they won’t harm your skin due to the nailpolish coat n as far as I know nailpolish do not harm skins but the spirit in it actually heals small cuts or wounds.
